Paul On Trial – Chapter 5

What is the gospel? It is the gospel according to Saint Matthew, the gospel according to Saint Mark, the gospel according to Saint Luke, and the gospel according to Saint John.

The gospel is “the gospel of Jesus Christ the Son of God.” (Mark 1:1).

It is every word of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. The gospel is the life story of Jesus Christ.

Luke 1:1-4 “For as much as many have taken in hand to set forth in order a declaration of those things which are most surely believed us. Even as they delivered them unto us, which from the beginning were eyewitnesses, and ministers of the Word. It seemed good to me also, having had perfect understanding of all things from the very first, to write unto you in order, most excellent Theophilus. That you may know the certainty of those things, wherein you have been instructed.”

The disciples of Jesus Christ were his witnesses to tell the world what happened during his life and ministry.

Luke 24:46-48 “And he said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behooved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day; and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. And you are witnesses of these things.”

Luke gives his own concise definition of what the gospel is.

Acts 1:1-3 “The former treastise have I made, O Theophilus, of all that Jesus began both to do and teach, until the day in which he was taken up, after that he through the Holy Ghost had given commandments unto the apostles whom he had chosen: To whom he also showed himself alive after his passion by many infallible proofs, being seen of them forty days, and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God.”

The qualifications of an apostle were given in Acts 1:21-23 “Wherefore of these men which have accompanied us all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us, beginning from the baptism of John, until that same day that he was taken up from among us, must one be ordained to be a witness with us of his resurrection. And they appointed two, Joseph called Barsabes, who was surnamed Justus, and Matthias.”

Notice that Paul did not meet these qualifications to be an apostle. Paul was not with them at all, ever. Paul NEVER followed Jesus and could not possibly be a witness. Paul had witnessed NOTHING.

So, the apostles were to give witness of what they had seen and heard, from John’s baptism, unto the ascension of Jesus Christ into heaven. This is the gospel. It is everything about the life and ministry of Jesus Christ. Every word of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John is the gospel of Jesus Christ the Son of God. Not one word more, or one word less is the complete gospel. Jesus told people to repent and believe the gospel from the very beginning of his ministry.

Mark 1:14-15 “Now after that John was put into prison , Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God, and saying, the time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent and believe the gospel.”

How could they do this? They had to HEAR the gospel before they could believe it. What modern Christians claim the gospel to be had not yet happened! Yet Jesus commanded the people to believe the gospel. What Paul claimed the gospel to be had not yet happened either.

1 Corinthians 15:1-5 “Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also you have received, and wherein you stand; By which also you are saved, if you keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless you have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins, according to the scriptures; and that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures: And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve.”

(I hate to nitpick, but Paul leaves me no other option. Jesus was first seen of Mary Magdalene (John 20:11-12). Then he was seen of Cleopas and Simon on the road to Emmaus (Luke 24:13-35). then he was seen of the ten (John 20:24-25). Then he was seen of the eleven and they that were with them (Luke 24:8-11,33). How can what Paul says be God’s Word when he tells the gospel story incorrectly? He said the twelve. Did he not know that Judas was the traitor and hanged himself? Paul told us that he was not taught the gospel by men, but by revelation of Jesus Christ. If this were true, Jesus would have told Paul the facts correctly. After all, Jesus was the one who appeared to all these people. Jesus did not first appear to Peter and then to the twelve.).

At the beginning of Jesus’ ministry it was approximately three years before Jesus would be crucified, die for our sins, be buried, and rise again the third day. Yet Jesus preached the gospel and commanded people to believe the gospel. The gospel that Jesus preached was the gospel of the KINGDOM OF GOD. It could be believed from the very beginning of his ministry. Every word that Jesus Christ spoke was the gospel of the kingdom of God. Almost every parable that Jesus taught started with “The kingdom of God shall be likened unto…. And, What shall we liken the kingdom of heaven unto? Unto what shall we compare it?”

Again, Luke defined the gospel as being, “ALL that Jesus began to do and to teach.” (Acts 1:1).

Jesus the king came to establish his kingdom, and he taught about his kingdom. Jesus said the kingdom of God is within you.

Luke 17:20-21 “And when he was demanded of the Pharisees, when the kingdom of God should come, he answered them and said, the kingdom of God comes not with observation: Neither shall they say, Lo here! or, Lo there! For, behold, the kingdom of God is within you.”

Jesus admitted to Pontius Pilate that he was a king and that his kingdom is not of this world.

John 18:36-37 “Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world my servants would fight, that I should not be delivered unto the Jews: but now my kingdom is not from hence. Pilate said unto him, Art thou a king then? Jesus answered, You say that I am a king: to this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Everyone that is of the truth hears my voice.”

Jesus preached the kingdom of God that is within you and the kingdom of heaven that is not of this world. The laws of the kingdom are every word, teaching, and command that Jesus spoke. It is every red letter in the New Testament. Many people say that Jesus taught the law of Moses and the prophets. No, he did not. Jesus clearly stated that the law and the prophets were until John the Baptist, and since that time the kingdom of God is preached.

Luke 16:16 “The law and the prophets were until John: since that time the kingdom of God is preached, and every man presses into it.”

Matthew 4:17 “From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”

Matthew 11:12-13 “And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffers violence, and the violent take it by force. For all the law prophesied until John.”

The gospel of the kingdom of God, which includes all the words, teaching, and commands of King Jesus, are the covenant of salvation.

Matthew 26:26-28 “And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed it, and gave it to the disciples, and said, take, eat; this is my body. And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink all of it: for this is the blood of the New Testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.”

Luke 22:20 “Likewise the cup after supper, saying, this cup is the New Testament in my blood, which is shed for you.”

There are blessings and curses in this covenant just as there were in the old covenant. Many more curses than people realize, you just need eyes to see them. The new covenant is a covenant of law and order, just as the old covenant is a covenant of law and order.

Today a FALSE grace gospel is being preached, and people are being told that no matter what they do, or how they behave, they are still saved and going to heaven. This is lawlessness. This is anarchy. It is open rebellion against King Jesus and Father God. This false grace gospel is a lie. It is the anti-Christ gospel, because it is anti, or against the teachings and the commands of Jesus Christ.

The Apostle Peter warned of it. Speaking of ALL Paul’s epistles, Peter said this, 2 Peter 3:16-17 “As also in ALL HIS EPISTLES, speaking in them of these things; in which are some things hard to be understood, which they that are unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, unto their own destruction. You therefore, beloved, seeing you know these things before, beware unless you also being led away with the error of the wicked, fall from your own steadfastness.”

Here is what King Jesus said about the kingdom of God and salvation.

Luke 6:46 “And why do you call me, Lord, Lord, and do not do the things which I say?”

John 15:14 “You are my friends, IF YOU DO WHATSOEVER I COMMAND YOU.”

John 14:21-24 “He that has my commandments, and obeys them, he it is that loves me: and he that loves me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him. He that loves me not obeys not my sayings: and the word which you hear is not my own, but the Father which sent me.”

Matthew 7:21-27 “Not everyone that says unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven, but he that does the will of my Father which is in heaven. Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in your name? and in your name have cast out devils? and in your name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, you that work iniquity. Therefore anyone who hears these sayings of mine, and does them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock: and the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock. And everyone that hears these sayings of mine and does them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand: and the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it.”

Matthew 10:28 “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.”

John 5:28-29 “Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice, and shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation.”

Do not believe the lie that what Jesus taught, said and commanded is not for us today.

The last command of Jesus to his apostles was this, Matthew 28:19-20 “Go you therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen.”

Notice that Jesus did not command to establish his church based upon some NEW REVELATION. NO. He commanded the church to obey ALL THINGS WHATSOEVER I HAVE COMMANDED YOU. That is every single thing that Jesus commanded his apostles. The message of Jesus Christ is the message for the church today. There is no new revelation.

In AD 96, which was 29 years after Paul had his head chopped off, and had written all of his epistles, Jesus appeared to the Apostle John on the isle of Patmos. Notice that the message of Jesus Christ had not changed or progressed at all. It is still the same message. There is no mention nor hint of Paul’s revelation. It simply is not there. Jesus still said that salvation is based upon works of faith on the part of every person. Each person will be saved or damned based on their own works. To enter heaven, it is required to obey the commandments of God.

Revelation 3:15-19 I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot: I would you were cold or hot. So then because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spew you out of my mouth. Because you say, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and know not that you are wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked. I counsel you to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that you may be rich, and white raiment, that you may be clothed, and that the shame of your nakedness do not appear; and anoint your eyes with eye salve, that you may see.”

Revelation 22:12-16 “And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man as his work shall be. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last. Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city. For without are dogs, and sorcerers, and whore-mongers, and murderers, and idolaters, and whosoever loves and makes a lie. I Jesus have sent my angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and offspring of David; the bright and morning star.”

Jesus was still preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God. It is the one and only Everlasting Gospel. Wake up! Anoint your eyes with eye salve that you may see. Be zealous therefore and repent. Otherwise you will be vomited by Jesus into hell, and the lake that burns with fire and brimstone. (Revelation 3:15-19).
