Proverbs 1:1 “The proverbs of Solomon the son of David, king of Israel”
The book of Proverbs is primarily written by King Solomon. He is considered the wisest man who ever lived. By studying his life in Scripture we find out that he also became foolish in his old age. The reasons for this are among others: He had 1,000 women, either wives or concubines; he added to his kingdom chariots and horses of war; he heaped up gold, silver, and other treasure; and he worshipped idols. All of these things God forbade and Solomon chose to do those things still. So the greatest and wisest and richest king became a fool at the end of his life.
Proverbs 1:2 “To know wisdom and instruction; to perceive the words of understanding”
One of the greatest needs among people of all ages is wisdom. Many say that wisdom is the ability to apply and to use knowledge. Just having knowledge of something is not enough, but being able to use and apply that knowledge is necessary. Back in the 1980’s many people knew about computer panels and circuitry, but it took a few people like Steve Jobs and Bill Gates, who had the gift of wisdom to know how to apply that knowledge. They were responsible for starting Apple, Macintosh, iPads, Microsoft, and the internet.
To gain wisdom we need to know instruction. Why are there so many schools and universities in the world? It is because through instruction that knowledge and wisdom are gained. We are to be continually instructed from God’s word. The main way that this is to happen will be through our own study and meditation of the word. As we do this the Holy Spirit will teach and instruct us. Without his intervention and help our own study and meditation would be useless. I once met a man who studied the Bible 8 hours a day, every single day. And yet what he learned was not from God, but was error. We should continually cry out for eyes that see, ears that hear, and a heart that understands. It needs to be the Holy Spirit who teaches us and not we ourselves.
To perceive the words of understanding. Do you realize that the words of understanding can be revealed unto you and yet you are still in the dark about them? The Bible is available to everyone who wants to read it, yet it seems that almost everyone who reads it gets something different from it. So there is a vast difference from being Spirit taught and being flesh taught. This is why there are so many sects and denominations among Christendom. It is obvious that there is a lot of error because they are all saying something different instead of saying the same thing.
James 1:22 “But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves”.
As soon as someone hears the word of God, but does not do it, they are deceived. And since there are very few doers of the word today, there are many that are deceived. The saddest part is that they are self-deceived. No one had to deceive them because they deceived themselves. This is a sad state of affairs in which we are living today.
Proverbs 1:3 “To receive the instruction of wisdom, justice, and judgement, and equity”
Instruction must be received. It cannot be forced upon someone against their will. The student must be willing and eager to learn. Unless there is a receptive eagerness to learn from the Proverbs, there will be no benefit derived from reading or studying them.
Those who are eager to learn have entered into God’s university. As in any university there are professors who will teach the courses to us. Here we find four professors who will instruct us if we will attend their classes, pay attention, and be receptive to what they teach us.The names of our instructors are wisdom, justice, judgement. and equity.
Wisdom is the knowledge of God and the ability to apply it in our own life and circumstances. The classes that wisdom teaches will be about practical things that can be applied immediately into our lives. They will be principles upon which our life can be firmly founded and established. They will be things that only very few people will be able to see, because the others have not met the conditions that wisdom places upon her students. Those who meet her conditions will receive great rewards and eternal benefits. So strive to be one of the blessed people.
Justice is one of God’s divine attributes. As Moses said directly to Jehovah, “Will not the judge of the whole earth do right?” Indeed he will because that is who he is, he is a God of justice, fairness, and equality. Rest assured that when judgement day arrives that God’s judgement will be fair and without any partiality, meted out equally to every man and woman. Justice will teach us how to live in preparation of judgement day. We know that we shall all be judged according to our own works whether good or bad, because the Bible promises us that it will be thus. And justice will teach us how to order our lives and to live in such a way that we will stand in the day of judgement, and be counted worthy of eternal life. So be careful to attend all of the classes that Justice teaches and to pay close attention.
Judgement is also a divine attribute of God. He weighs out the affairs of men in his scale and sees the motives and the intents of the heart. Be assured that a fairer judgement cannot be found anywhere else than what God will mete out. Thankfully his judgement is also accompanied by mercy and grace. When we recognise our errors and sins, and we repent of them, then they are all washed away and forgotten. So be careful to repent fully of your sins and cease to commit them any longer.
Equity is our other professor. What is the meaning of equity? it is the quality of being fair and impartial; something that is fair and just. The equity of Solomon is perhaps the best human example of this, along with Moses. You have seen the statue of justice haven’t you? It is a lady wearing a blindfold and holding a scale in her hand. She is blind to all partiality or bribes and weighs the matters in her scale, and will only accept what the fair result is. Equity will teach us to be this way too. Modern “Christians” always say, “Do not judge!” They are in error of course. We are to judge all things with impartiality and fairness. How else can a leader judge between his brothers and settle the issues justly? And don’t forget that the apostles will sit upon twelve thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel on the day of judgement. How can we know a wolf in sheep’s clothing or know a tree by it’s fruit without impartial and fair judgement. God sent judges to judge Israel and in Jesus’ day the Sanhedrin were the judges of Israel.
Proverbs 1:4 “To give subtlety to the simple, to the young man knowledge and discretion”
To give subtlety to the simple. To be subtle is the acuteness or penetration of mind; delicacy of discrimination. A fine-drawn distinction; refinement of reasoning.
The simple, of course, are those who are lacking in these qualities. Every baby born lacks all subtlety, knowledge, and wisdom. These things need to be acquired over time, yet many people reach adulthood and are still lacking these qualities. So the Proverbs can give us discernment and a refining of our reasoning. We will become able to see through events and discern what is truly happening in any given situation.
The young man will certainly receive knowledge of one type or another. The Proverbs provide the correct type of knowledge that is necessary to live a godly life. This knowledge is also beneficial for this present time as it is what good kings govern by. They also produce discretion which is the power or right to decide or act according to one’s own judgement; freedom of judgement or choice.
In common speech it is the ability to hold your tongue, and speak only what you wish to speak in any situation. It is to bridle your tongue. It is to be always in control of your own actions. The ability to always exercise self-control and to never lose control of your own actions or words. How many problems in life could be avoided by acquiring discretion!
Proverbs 1:5 “A wise man will hear, and will increase in learning; and a man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsels”
A wise man will hear. The only way to learn something is to listen to other people, and through observation. If you do all of the talking you will have learned nothing. A wise man became wise because he acquired the ability to listen and to observe. So therefore, a wise man will hear, and will increase in learning. We are habitual creatures. The habits acquired in youth will carry over into adulthood, unless we work diligently to change those habits into new ones.
A man of understanding took the time to acquire that understanding. We all have 24 hours in each day. What we do with that time decides what we will be and what we will possess later on in life. If all of your free time is spent watching television, playing video games, participating in sports, or thousands of other secular activities; you will never acquire spiritual understanding. It requires sacrifice, time, and discipline to acquire it.
And a man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsels. One of the characteristics of youth is to believe that they are smarter and wiser than older people. Why exactly that is remains a mystery to me. Common sense tells us that experience produces understanding and wisdom. Maybe because the young men have so little experience they think they know much. Anyways, if a man understands correctly how life works, he will seek out wise counsel.
In 1 Kings chapter one we read the story of Rehoboam, the son of Solomon, the king of Israel. He rejected the counsel of the old men who were Solomon’s counselors and listened to the counsel of the young men. As a result the nation of Israel was irreparably torn into two and civil war broke out. Much damage, heartache, and death came as a result of a young king listening to young, inexperienced counselors. Once understanding comes to you, you will seek out the wise and experienced counselors, and disregard the young men who lack wisdom.
Proverbs 1:6 “To understand a proverb, and the interpretation; the words of the wise, and their dark sayings”
A proverb is a profound saying, maxim, or oracular utterance requiring interpretation. The ability to correctly interpret a proverb does not come easily. Much meditation time needs to be spent to acquire this ability. It is not mental but spiritual, and only through the help of the Holy Spirit can you acquire the ability to interpret a proverb. Each proverb is much like a parable. They both speak about one thing but really mean something else. The natural realm is used to explain and compare the spiritual realm.Without the interpretation a proverb is useless. They can be hard nuts to crack. Yet I have discovered that over time, and with much study and meditation, that the proverbs can become as clear as the noon-day sun to you. The ability to interpret proverbs comes with a stiff price tag to pay to those who are willing to do so.
The words of the wise cannot be understood by everyone.Their sayings are dark and closed to those who are lacking in wisdom. It takes wisdom and enlightenment to understand the wise men. It is very much like learning a different language. At first all of the words are dark and without meaning to you, until you apply yourself to study, practise, and learn. A wise man is like someone speaking Chinese when you only speak English. It is completely and totally foreign to you and you understand not one thing that is spoken.
I remember when I was a young man and a young spanish speaking lady came into the store that I worked at. I greeted her in Spanish and such relief flooded her, and she began excitedly to speak in Spanish. Then I remember such sadness that came to her face when she discovered that this greeting was the only Spanish that I could speak. Later on in life I applied myself and learned Spanish becoming fluent in that language. So it is with wisdom. At the beginning you many understand little or nothing about it, but if you will apply yourself by study and meditation, you will slowly but surely increase in wisdom until you become one of these wise men with their dark sayings.
Proverbs 1:7 “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction”
Modern preachers tell us not to fear God, they say that we are to have a respect for him, but not to fear him. They misunderstand the difference between the fear of the Lord and being afraid. I am a citizen of the USA. I fear the laws of the government and the punishment given to the law breakers. Therefore I do not murder, rob banks, sell drugs, rape, destroy other people’s property, kidnap people, or anything else that will land me in prison. I fear the penalty for breaking the laws of the US government. However I am not in the least bit afraid of the police, the sheriff department, the FBI, the governor of my state, the president, or anyone else in the government. I fear what they would do to me if I were a law breaker, but since I respect and obey the laws of the USA, I have no fear of any government officials. The same holds true with God. I fear what he will do to me if I am a rebellious sinner. But since I walk in accordance with his laws to the best I know how, I am not afraid of God. I fear his laws and thereby I obey them, but I am not afraid of God in the least bit.
The fear of the Lord is the BEGINNING of knowledge. Until a person fears the Lord they have no knowledge. The modern church is full of people who claim to know the Lord intimately and that he is their best friend. They believe themselves to be possessors of great knowledge about God and his word. Yet they do not fear the Lord. They claim that all of their sins past, present, and future are all forgiven. They claim to be born again children of God and the very righteousness of God in Christ. They claim to be eternally saved. Yet, because they do not fear the Lord, they have not even the beginnings of knowledge. They are blind guides, and if the blind lead the blind, they shall both fall into the ditch.
Matthew 7:21-23 “Not everyone who says unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that does the will of my Father which is in heaven. Many will say unto me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in your name?and in your name cast out devils? and in your name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, you that work iniquity”
Fools despise wisdom and instruction. A fool has no interest in wisdom or instruction, they think that they already know it all. They do not think that they are in need of the Lord’s help or of his instructions. This also applies to those theologians or students of the Bible who are ever learning, but what they learn did not come from God. The churches are full of deceived people today. They hear the word, but they do not do it, and thereby become deceived. They have eyes which do not see, ears which do not hear, and hearts which do not understand. They are ever learning but never able to come to the knowledge of the truth. The Pharisees and the scribes were very studious people, but they were still called blind leaders of the blind by Jesus himself. It takes illumination in our heart by the Holy Spirit to truly understand spiritual things. Jesus only fully explained his words to his disciples. All others were excluded from understanding the true message of his teaching. Do you want to be instructed by God and to know his will? Then become a true disciple and meet the qualifications that Jesus commanded for disciples.
Proverbs 1:8-9 “My son, hear the instruction of your father, and forsake not the law of your mother: For they shall be an ornament of grace unto your head, and chains about your neck”
Again and again Solomon admonishes his son to hear the instructions of his father. We can have the very best instructions about life available to us, but if we do not follow and obey them, they will do us no good at all. The tendency to do things our own way and without any instructions runs strong within us. Whenever I open an electronic device or something that requires assembly, I notice that I usually try to do it myself without looking at the instructions that come with it. When I run into a problem, that is when I look at the instruction manual. Many of us only turn to the Bible when we are having troubles. Yet wisdom dictates that we LISTEN to wise instruction. What would be the end result of someone studying the Book of Proverbs every single day of their lives? Would it not make a profound change in their lives?
Forsake not the law of your mother. Modern Christians want to forsake God’s law. Not only do they wish to escape the law of Moses but the law of Jesus Christ as well. Why do they desire this? They claim that Jesus freed them from the law and that they are now under grace. But how can they think that Jesus freed them from his own law? The law of Jesus is the New Covenant in his blood. Jesus called this new law being instructed in the Kingdom of God. The book of wisdom, the Proverbs, instructs us to not forsake the law. There is a strong desire in people to be free from all law and punishment. Men wish to govern themselves. They wish to rule and govern their own lives. This is the spirit of anti-Christ within them. It is rebellion against King Jesus and the laws that govern his kingdom. It is diabolical in it’s nature and was birthed by satan himself when he rebelled against God and attempted to start his own kingdom. Obedience to the law of the Kingdom of God is the only way to salvation. You cannot have Jesus as your savior unless he is also your Lord and King.
For they shall be an ornament of grace unto your head, and chains about your neck. Your adorning is to be instruction and commandments, these are your precious jewelry. Notice that instructions and law bring grace. There is a totally false grace being taught today. I call it heresy. It teaches that you do NOTHING and that is grace. True Bible doctrine teaches that by receiving law through instruction and obeying it, is how grace comes. Grace is an ornament given to the obedient ones. The disobedient, the rebellious, and the law breakers have received no grace at all. But through hearing the word and not obeying it, they have become self-deceived into THINKING THAT THEY ARE UNDER GRACE when indeed they are not. Choose to obey the law of the Kingdom of God taught by Jesus Christ and your life will be filled with grace.
Proverbs 1:10-19 “My son, if sinners entice you, consent not. If they say, come with us, let us lay wait for blood, let us lurk privily for the innocent without cause: Let us swallow them up alive as the grave; and whole, as those that go down into the pit: we shall find all precious substance, we shall fill our houses with spoil: cast in your lot among us; let us all have one purse: my son, walk not in the way with them; refrain your foot from their path: for their feet run to evil, and make haste to shed blood. Surely in vain the net is spread in the sight of any bird. And they lay wait for their own blood; they lurk privily for their own lives. So are the ways of everyone who is greedy of gain; which takes away the lives of the owners thereof”
Sinners will always try to entice you to do evil. Just turn on the television and you will be bombarded with messages by sinners to live as they live. The television is very subtle because it preaches it’s message of sin through telling stories. You get both visual and audio. The sinners make the lifestyle of sinning look normal and very desireable. There is a strong pull for you to be like them. We are community oriented creatures and have a strong desire to be like everyone else. No one likes to be different and to be an island unto themselves. Yet this is basically the experience for true disciples today. To follow and obey Jesus Christ you have to separate yourself from the pack and dare to be different. You may very well have to stand alone. I have discovered that to follow Jesus today is to be very lonely. No one else wants to live as you do and they openly show their displeasure in you because that you do live this way. The decision has to be made that you desire to obey Jesus Christ and to go to heaven no matter what the cost to you. You have to literally hate your life in this world and give it up, just as Jesus taught and commanded. You become eternity minded and give up your present temporal life in order to gain eternal life with God.
Never be greedy for gain and especially don’t be willing to steal, loot, and kill for it. God’s law of sowing and reaping guarantees that you will be repaid for your actions both in this present world, and also in the world to come. So you actually will find yourself in the position of doing these things unto yourself. The deeds that you do will also be done unto you. A life of stealing and killing just isn’t worth it. Yet especially the young men will be tempted and enticed to do these things. The temptation to inner city youth is especially strong and difficult for them to bear. When I used to live in Mexico I was offered employment driving drugs across the border into the USA. They promised easy money, new clothes, a new car, and a better life. They made it sound very desireable. I know people both young, middle-aged, and elderly who did it and who got caught. They went to jail. Only my fear of going to prison and of going to hell stopped me from doing it. I was willing to suffer poverty and lack rather than to risk going to either jail or hell. Glamor and beauty are presented to cover up the ugly truth of what a life of sin will actually consist of. As Solomon said, the net that is spread in the sight of any bird is spread in vain. If King Solomon’s own son could be tempted to do these things, then how much more you and I. Don’t have a false sense of goodness and holiness and think that you cannot be tempted to do these things, because you can be. One day Abraham Lincoln heard his wife and dinner guests speaking very judgmentally about the southerners. He responded that they shouldn’t be too hard on the southerners because under similar conditions they themselves would be just like them. How true that is! Only by the grace of God are we not wicked and hideous sinners.
Proverbs 1:20-23 “Wisdom cries without; she utters her voice in the streets: She cries in the chief place of concourse, in the openings of the gates: in the city she utters her words, saying, How long, you simple ones, will you love simplicity? and the scorners delight in their scorning, and fools hate knowledge? Turn at my reproof: I will pour out my Spirit unto you, I will make known my words unto you”
Wisdom cries without. The voice of wisdom is never silent and she doesn’t just whisper or speak softly, but she shouts with a loud voice. It is like a radio or television or internet or satellite or cell phone signal. Without the proper receiving device set at the proper signal, there is only silence and you would think that there is nothing there. These signals are around us every moment of every day whether we ever tune into them or not. They are always available and just waiting for us to tune in and listen.
So wisdom is broadcasting her signal loud and clear to anyone who will tune in and listen. Each man and woman is a receiving device capable of tuning into her signal. We were born this way. We are made in the image and the likeness of God and therefore we are ready made, and totally capable to receive her broadcasting signal. The question is not IF wisdom is really broadcasting her signal to you, but the question is, WILL YOU take the time to learn to tune into her sigal?
Hearing from God is an art form and in this present generation it is a lost art form. As with any artistic gift, and you do have the gift if you were born as a human being, there must be a time of dedication to the development of this gift. You are gifted. Now, what will you do with this gift? The conditions for the correct use of your gift is that you listen, and then immediately apply what you hear by doing it in your own life. The problem that most people face is that they are not obedient doers of the word. The present theology and doctrine teaches that we are saved by grace and therefore do not need to DO anything. It was all done for us. So this automatically causes people to not hear the voice of wisdom or that they tune into an incorrect frequency or channel. This is readily visible and apparent, and needs no defence or argument. The proof is right before our eyes. There is but one Bible and yet there are many thousands, or tens of thousands of doctrinal interpretations of it. If we all were tuned into the voice of wisdom, then we would all hear, practise, and teach the same thing. Yet that is not the case. So the root cause is that people are not DOERS of the word, but hearers only, deceiving their own selves.
So what is the solution to this problem? First, recognize that there IS a problem. Second, repent and ask God to show you how to correct it. Third, be a doer of the word and immediately put into practise what he shows you to do. Then continue to take the time to listen to the voice of wisdom, learn to cherish her voice and place great value upon it, and be very careful to always obey and practise what she tells you to do.
Everyone who does not listen to the voice of wisdom to obey her are simple ones who love simplicity, scorners who delight in their scorning, and fools who hate knowledge. God is not mocked, and whatsoever a man sows that shall he also reap. If you listen to other voices, you will end up obeying them, and you will reap the results of what you have sowed. All paths lead to damnation in hell for all eternity except for ONE. Only the voice of wisdom can save you from hell and lead you safely to heaven. Unfortunately the voice of modern preachers and pastors, and modern Christianity itself are not the voice of wisdom, and they will lead you to eternal damnation. The voice of wisdom is the teachings that proceeded from the mouth of Jesus Christ. Jesus said that the wise man who built his house on the rock is he who HEARS THESE SAYINGS OF MINE AND OBEYS THEM. The teachings and the commands of Jesus Christ are the voice of wisdom and they are the ONLY way that lead to eternal salvation.
So the only wise and safe thing to do is to turn at wisdom’s reproof and allow her to pour out her spirit unto you. She is waiting, ready, willing, and able to do this for you. This pouring out of her spirit unto you is literal and it is very real. John spoke of this and I see it almost everyday in my dealings with other people. Those who have had wisdom pour her spirit upon them are of God, and they listen to and accept the words that I say and teach. Those who have not had wisdom pour her spirit upon them are not of God, and they do not listen to or accept what I say and teach. It is a very simple, good, and fully reliable way to know who is of the truth and who is of error. It never fails.
1 John 4:1,5,6 “Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they be of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world. They are of the world: therefore speak they of the world, and the world hears them. We are of God: he that knows God hears us: he that is not of God hears us not. Hereby know we the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error”.
Proverbs 1:24-30 “Because I have called, and you refused; I have stretched out my hand, and no man regarded; but you have set at naught all my counsel, and would none of my reproof: I also will laugh at your calamity: I will mock when your fear comes: when your fear comes as desolation, and your destruction comes as a whirlwind; when distress and anguish come upon you. Then shall they call upon me, but I will not answer; they shall seek me early, but they shall not find me: for that they hated knowledge, and did not choose the fear of the Lord: they would none of my counsel: they despised all my reproof”.
There comes an end to all things. We have been given only a short amount of time on this earth. That time is running out for all of us. When I was a child it seemed as if I had all of the time in the world. When I was a young man with all of my life ahead of me, it seemed like such a large amount of time that was given to me. Now I am nearly 55 years old and I look back and wonder where all of the years went to. Life seems like a very short affair to me now. My time is running out. There will soon come an end to my time here on this earth. Not only that, but I look back and wonder where the child that I was is now, or the youth that I once was, or the young man, or even the middle-aged man who shortly will no longer be me. In each stage of life we turn into a different person altogether with only memories of the person we once were. Nothing lasts forever or even for very long in this earth. These are the cold facts.
Because wisdom has called to us and stretched out her hand for so very long, and yet we have chosen not to listen, or take heed to her voice, or her instruction, or her rebukes; the day will come when she will no longer speak or listen to us. When she sees what we fear come upon us she will laugh and mock us, because that is exactly how we treated her for so very long. You cannot escape God’s eternal law of sowing and reaping. It will work for as long as this earth stands. So you have a decision to make. Once and for all either decide to listen to the voice of wisdom or decide not to listen to the voice of wisdom. No longer be caught in between the two, but make your decision. Time is running out for you.
Joel 3:14 “Multitudes, multitudes in the valley of decision: for the day of the Lord is near in the valley of decision”.
When calamity and distress come a person’s way, the very first thing that they will do is to call out to God. When an earthquake strikes or even extremely rough turbulence in an airplane, people just cry out to God. And wisdom says that she will not answer their call. Even though they seek her early, they shall not find her. Why? because they would none of her counsel, they hated knowledge, and did not choose the fear of the Lord. When things were going well they did not have time or interest in the voice of wisdom. They only sought her out when tragedy struck. When you will have none of her counsel and despise her reproofs, the time of decision will come to an end. There actually comes a time when you cannot any longer repent of your sins. What a very tragic and sad place to be in to find that you can no longer repent of your sins, and you are condemned to eternal damnation. Jeremiah spoke of this condition.
Jeremiah 8:20 “The harvest is past, the summer is ended, and we are not saved”.
There will come a time to multitudes of people while they are still alive on this earth, that they come to the knowledge and the realization that it is too late for them. They had all of their lifetime to listen to wisdom and to obey her voice, but they would not do it. The time given them to repent and obey the voice of wisdom has ended, and all that they have left is the terror of being cast into hell for all eternity. What a fearful picture that is! I hope to God that I never come to this place to experience it.
Proverbs 1:31-33 “Therefore they shall eat of the fruit of their own way, and be filled with their own devices. For the turning away of the simple shall slay them, and the prosperity of fools shall destroy them. But whoso hearkens unto me shall dwell safely, and shall be quiet from fear of evil”
Judgement from God will be completely just and without any partiality. Rest assured that you will get exactly what you deserve when the day of judgement arrives. You shall eat the fruit of your own way, and be filled with your own devices. Exactly as you have treated God in this earth is how he will treat you on the day of judgement. Likewise exactly as you have treated and judged other people is how you will be treated and judged by God. You WILL reap what you have sowed.
Sometimes it takes a long time to overcome certain things. I was very judgemental and even bitter towards people. It has taken many years to get to the place where I harbor no ill will towards anyone. I desire for everyone to be forgiven and pardoned from their sins. I don’t want anyone to be punished or sent to hell. Why? Because I love my neighbor as myself. I also realise now that exactly as I do towards other people is how it will be done to me on the day of judgement. I totally desire to be pardoned of all of my sins and to be allowed into heaven, so this is now my desire for everyone else too. I know from the Bible that this will not be the case, but I desire it anyways. And Jesus while still in his human body did the same thing. Even on the cross suffering so greatly, he said towards those who put him there, “Father forgive them for they know not what they do”
People desire riches and fame, yet wisdom says that the prosperity of fools shall slay them. Why desire riches and fame when in the end they will slay you? Jesus said, “What does it profit if a man gains the whole world and loses his own soul?” And, “You cannot serve God and money.” So make your choice in these matters. If you refuse to make a choice, then by default the wrong choice has been made for you automatically.
But whoso hearkens unto me shall dwell safely, and shall be quiet from fear of evil. The rewards for listening to wisdom are both temporal and also eternal. Please make the right choice while there is still time to do so. Time is running out for all of us. This life on earth will soon end for each and every one of us.
Proverbs 2:1-5 “My son, if you will receive my words, and hide my commandments with you; so that you incline your ear unto wisdom, and apply your heart unto understanding; yea, if you cry after knowledge, and lift up your voice for understanding; If you seek her as silver, and search for her as for hid treasures: then shall you understand the fear of the Lord, and find the knowledge of God”
God will not force his word or his will on you or on anyone. You must freely receive it as an act of your will. Not only must you receive his words but you must hide them with you. The commandments of God need to be hidden with you. How do you do this? By purposefully studying, meditating, and speaking these commandments. No only do you memorize these commandments, but you repeatedly go over them and imagine yourself doing them. You place a great value upon them and consider them to be your treasure.
This passage speaks of great effort on our part. It is neither simple nor easy. Today people only seem to want something from God if it costs them nothing and it is easy to do. Solomon speaks of just the opposite of this. He speaks of inclining your ear, applying your heart, crying after, lifting up your voice, seeking for, and searching for. All of this requires great effort on our part, along with discipline and stamina. This isn’t for everyone, just for those who truly hunger and thirst after the things of God with all their being. God is looking for people who will do ANYTHING to gain wisdom, knowledge, and understanding. They also back it up with continual action by obeying his commands, and thereby being full of good works of righteousness. These are the people who God will accept into his family and grant them eternal life in heaven. They will also receive benefits from doing this in this present world.
I have always heard of gold fever. I have read books and seen movies where this is depicted. It is a condition of greed after gold, precious metals, minerals, gem stones, or oil. People with gold fever will dedicate all of their time, resources, thoughts, words, and strength, to gaining this wealth. Men are capable of lying, cheating, stealing, violence, and murder, to achieve their goal of attaining this wealth. Gold fever brings out the very worst in human nature. It is an obsession with gaining wealth at any cost or sacrifice. This is the type of searching that Solomon speaks of. Above in referring to gold fever we see the negative, bad side of this. Seeking after wisdom and the things of God is the good side of this. Only good, lawful, holy, means are used when searching for the things of God. It is a passionate, glorious, and holy obsession for knowing God and finding his hidden spiritual treasures.
Christianity today seems devoid of all passion and especially spiritual hunger. The modern doctrines teach that you receive salvation and all of God’s blessings by praying the sinner’s prayer, and thereby being “born again”. They have traded passion and spiritual hunger for a transaction. Yet the history of all of the great saints of old is completely and totally different. These hardy souls were willing to make every sacrifice, expend all of their earthly goods, invest all of their time and energy, and literally forfeit their own lives, to achieve the coveted goal of knowing God and obtaining eternal life. Theirs was a passionate, on fire, and consuming faith. Today the faith of Christianity has grown cold, or lukewarm at the very best.
The faith of our spiritual fathers, which all of the great saints of old had, is the true faith that was revealed in Jesus Christ and his apostles. The modern faith is cold and lacking passion, and it is a weak imitation of true faith. We have only to read the four gospels and the Book of Acts to see a burning and passionate faith presented. Honestly compare your life to theirs and see if you measure up. For nearly all people today, when compared to those in the New Testament, look as different from those saints as a space alien would look to us. Either the Bible is a lie, or we are not Christians today. There is just absolutely no resemblance between the modern Christian and the Bible saints, none whatsoever. They are authentic and true, and we are fake imitations and lies.
Proverbs 2:6-9 “For the Lord gives wisdom: out of his mouth comes knowledge and understanding. He lays up sound wisdom for the righteous: he is a buckler to them that walk uprightly. He keeps the paths of judgement, and preserves the way of his saints. Then shall you understand righteousness, and judgement, and equity; yea, every good path.
The Lord gives wisdom. People look for wisdom through philosophy and the writings of wise men. Yet that is not where wisdom is found. Man’s wisdom is but empty and vain words that cannot convert or save anyone. Only the Lord gives wisdom. We have his written word and if you learn to hear clearly the voice of wisdom speaking, then you too will be filled with wisdom.
Out of his mouth comes knowledge and understanding. Any type of knowledge or understanding that came from any source other than the mouth of God, will never convert or save you. Let God be true and every man a liar. Neither look for nor receive man’s wisdom, it is corrupt and sinful. All that comes from sources other than the mouth of God is also corrupt and sinful. The mouth of God is a pure fountain of spring water, all other sources are contaminated and filthy, unfit to drink or even to bathe in.
He lays up sound wisdom for the righteous. God is very selective of who he reveals his treasures of wisdom to. It is laid up for the righteous and no other people will find it. Today the church is filled with people who THINK they have God’s wisdom and blessings upon their lives. Since they do not have the fear of the Lord in their lives, and that is the beginning of wisdom, we know that they have a counterfeit wisdom that is completely false. Jesus only revealed his secrets to his disciples, and to the people without he spoke in parables. Only his disciples could know the secrets and mysteries of the Kingdom of Heaven, to all others he hid it from them.
Matthew 13:9-18 “Who has ears to hear, let him hear. And the disciples came and said unto him, Why do you speak unto them in parables? He answered and said unto them, Because it is given unto you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it is not given. For whosoever has, to him shall be given, and he shall have more abundance: but whosoever has not, from him shall be taken away even that he has. Therefore speak I unto them in parables: because they seeing see not; and hearing they hear not, neither do they understand. And in them is fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah, which says, By hearing you shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing you shall see, and shall not perceive: For this people’s heart is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes they have closed; lest at any time they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and should understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them. But blessed are your eyes, for they see: and your ears, for they hear. For verily I say unto you, That many prophets and righteous men have desired to see those things which you see, and have not seen them; and to hear those things which you hear, and have not heard them. Hear you therefore the parable of the sower.”
He is a buckler to them that walk uprightly. A buckler is a round shield held by a grip and sometimes having straps through which the arm is passed. To be a shield to; support; defend. If we walk uprightly before the Lord, then he will be our shield and protection. When the nation of Israel walked uprightly before the Lord, they could be outnumbered a thousand to one by their enemies, and still defeat them in battle. On several occasions they didn’t even need to fight, for the angel of the Lord slew all of their enemies. At times he sent the plague to kill them, at other times it was hornets, and at times he caused his enemies to slay one another. It was the Lord defending his covenant people and destroying their enemies for them. He will do the same for us today if we meet the requirement of walking uprightly before him.
He keeps the paths of judgement, and preserves the way of his saints. If we walk uprightly before the Lord, he will judge our enemies and destroy them for us. The Father is very jealous concerning his children. Remember that the Romans waged war on the Christians and crucified millions of them. They put them in the arena to fight to the death, and to let lions eat them. The death of the martyrs is holy and good in the sight of the Lord. For so many of them it is the way of salvation, for in times of peace they do not obey the commands of Jesus Christ, but when an enemy steals all of their possessions, imprisons, tortures, and kills them; that is when they become obedient to the Lord and they glorify him with their death. Other than in martyrdom, the believer who walks uprightly before the Lord can expect and trust that the Lord will be their protector. The cross defeated Rome in the end. They fought bitterly against the cross of Jesus Christ for many years, but in the end the cross won. Where is Rome right now? It only exists in ruins and in historical records. Yet the cross of Jesus Christ can still be seen all over the world.
Proverbs 2:10-11 “When wisdom enters into your heart, and knowledge is pleasant unto your soul; discretion shall preserve you, and understanding shall keep you”
Learning to live for the Lord is a process, and it takes time to be transformed into his image. When you follow the instructions laid out by Solomon, the day will come when wisdom enters into your heart, and knowledge is pleasant unto your soul. At the beginning these things go against your nature and desires. Like an untamed horse you need to be broken before you can be ridden. If you allow the Lord to tame your heart by following his instructions, the things of the Lord will become pleasant unto your soul.
This is when the blessings of the Lord will become yours. Discretion shall preserve you. Discretion is the power or right to decide or act according to one’s own judgement; freedom of judgement or choice. Once wisdom enters into your soul, your own discretion will be godly and will reflect the Lord’s will, and thereby it will preserve you. Without wisdom you will rot and be lost. And understanding shall keep you.
To keep is to cause or continue in a given position, state, course, or action: to maintain in condition or order, as by care and labor: to maintain it’s usable or edible condition; preserve.
Understanding is what will keep you. When you have the Lord’s understanding of how things and situations work, then all of your choices and actions will be blessed, and thereby you will be kept. When you lack understanding you will make bad choices and many mistakes. It is totally in your best interest to gain wisdom and understanding. Your life will be transformed as a result.
Proverbs 2:12-15 “To deliver you from the way of the evil man, from the man that speaks froward things; Who leave the paths of uprightness, to walk in the ways of darkness; who rejoice to do evil, and delight in the frowardness of the wicked; whose ways are crooked, and they froward in their paths”
To deliver you from the way of the evil man. By nature we are evil. Babies already have tendencies of selfishness and self-centeredness. Little children tell lies, throw temper tantrums, fight with other children, sometimes don’t like to share their toys, and are disobedient to their parents. We are all born with the sin nature from the spiritual death passed on to us by Adam’s sin of rebellion against God. Men are inherently evil, there are none who are born righteous. Jesus told the rich young ruler, “Why do you call me good? There are none that are good but God.” So we need to be delivered from the way of the wicked and evil men.
Also we need to be delivered from the man that speaks froward things. Froward is to be willfully contrary; not easily managed. The synonyms of froward are obstinate, willful, disobedient, fractious, wayward, unmanageable, and difficult. So the froward man speaks contrary and against God, his words, and his will. Our deliverance from the froward man is to not participate in his lifestyle or his speech. There is an old saying, “tell me who you’re with and I tell you who you are”, and another one is, “Birds of the same feather fly together”. And the Bible tells us that bad company corrupts good manners. So we definitely need deliverance from froward men, and one of the first steps in our deliverance is to not associate ourselves with these people. We are not to watch their television shows, or movies, or listen to them on the internet.
Who leave the paths of uprightness, to walk in the ways of darkness. Many people have started out in the paths of the righteous but later on have left them to walk in in the ways of darkness. For this we need to constantly be on our guard to not be led away with the error of the wicked. These things do not happen all at once but little by little. We start getting caught up in the troubles, cares, and worries of life. Then because we feel tired and worn out, mentally and emotionally drained, we then want to relieve the pressure by watching television or some other leisure activity instead of seeking God. It all seems so innocent as we deceive ourselves into thinking that this will help and not harm us, and thus the downward plunge begins, not with anything earth shattering, but just little innocent looking things.
When we walk with the Lord we walk in light and we ourselves become the light of the world. Jesus is the true light and he is the word of God. So as we meditate, study, speak, and obey the word of God, we will walk in the light. All else in this world is darkness and death. When we cease to study, meditate, speak, and obey the word of God; we automatically begin to walk in darkness. We are like the moon that has no light of it’s own, but reflects the sun. When the earth blocks the sun’s light from reaching the moon, it goes dark and silent. It has no light of it’s own and no ability whatsoever to produce any light. People are the same for they have no ability to produce their own light and they must walk in the fulness of the Lord’s light in order to have any light to shine.
Who rejoice to do evil, and delight in the frowardness of the wicked. When we walk in the fulness of the Lord’s presence we will rejoice in the Lord. The opposite unfortunately is also true. When we walk in the world without the Lord we will one day get to the point where we rejoice to do evil, and delight in the frowardness of the wicked. It is a spiritual law that cannot be broken. For this condition the Lord told us “That if your eye be single your whole body shall be filled with light, but if your eye be evil your whole body shall be filled with darkness”. The single eye is focused on the Lord and his word, and nothing else. The evil eye is looking at something else. “God is not mocked! Whatsoever a man sows that shall he also reap. He who sows to the flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption, but he who sows to the spirit shall of the spirit reap life everlasting”. What you look at will determine what you are full of, light or darkness.
The ways of the wicked are crooked, and they froward in their paths. You cannot hide what you are. I so often hear people say “Only God knows my heart”. But that is not true, everyone else does too. Jesus said it this way, “The tree is known by it’s fruit”. Meaning of course that what a person says and does reveals what they have hidden in their heart. An apple tree produces apples, and only apples, and thereby everyone knows that the heart of this tree is apple. A vine that produces grapes announces to the entire earth that it’s heart is grape. A wolf in sheep’s clothing attempts to deceive people into thinking that it is indeed a sheep, and the simple and careless people will be deceived. Men like Joel Osteen and Joseph Prince have deceived millions of people with their deception. Yet anyone who is observant and knows their Bible well will see them for what they are, false prophets. Be careful, observant, diligent in watching. Jesus said to be careful to not be deceived by false prophets and to be watching and waiting for his own return.
