Is Tovia Singer correct that Paul butchers Isaiah 59:20-21?

DATE

Video Description

We initially review other misquotes and manipulations of Isaiah to Paul's favorite doctrine of faith alone.

Then we get to Isaiah 59:20-21 which Paul quotes in Romans 11:26-27.

Tovia Singer says Isaiah is butchering by Paul in his quote.

To test Mr. Singer, we will compare the Dead Sea Scrolls version in Isaiah -- not the Masoretic text that Singer may rely upon.

In Romans 11:25-27 (ASV) we read:

25 and so all Israel shall be saved: even as it is written,

26 There shall come out of Zion the Deliverer;

He shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob:

27 And this is my covenant unto them,

When I shall take away their sins.

Paul purports to be quoting the following passage from Isaiah 59:20-21 in Romans 11:26-27 but Mr. Singer says this was butchered in Paul. So what does Isaiah 59:20-21 say :

20. And the Redeemer shall come to Zion, [ Paul contradicts this, saying the opposite]

and unto them that turn from transgression in Jacob, saith the Lord. [Paul reverses this, credited God, not the people, as the cause of repenting]

21 As for me, this is my covenant with them, saith the Lord; [Paul retains this 80%] My spirit that is upon thee, [Deleted, and replaced with "When I shall take away their sins"]

and my words which I have put in thy mouth, [deleted]

shall not depart out of thy mouth, [deleted]

nor out of the mouth of thy seed, [deleted]

nor out of the mouth of thy seed’gs seed, [deleted]

saith the Lord, from henceforth and for ever. [deleted]

Tovia Singer's conclusion is too soft. Paul not only misquotes this as about "turn away ungodliness in Jacob," when instead God simply promises those who "turn from transgression in Jacob" that God will save them, and reside with them forever, Paul uses this to say all Israel will be saved, when God has only the repentant in view, not all Israel..

Paul eviscerates this to try to prove people cannot initiate their salvation by repentance. In full context, this is initiated by the people in response to God's promise to save people. God makes it clear this is not compulsion, but an offer than can be accepted wisely, or rejected foolishly.
