Did Paul Lie in Court in Acts 23:6-7 and hence violated Jesus' words against false testimony?

Jul 9, 2022

Video Description

We covered in prior videos on Trophimus' entry into the Temple defiling it in an uncircumcised state. Here in Acts 23:6-7 we read about Paul's appearance before the Sanhedrin Court. The uproad led people to bring Paul to the Sanhedrin before the court knew what was the charge. So the Sanhedrin ask Paul about the charge against him that they are supposed to review.

Then this happens in Acts 23:6-7:

Then Paul, knowing that some of them were Sadducees and the others Pharisees, called out in the Sanhedrin, “My brothers, I am a Pharisee, descended from Pharisees. I stand on trial because of the hope of the resurrection of the dead.” 7 When he said this, a dispute broke out between the Pharisees and the Sadducees, and the assembly was divided. (NIV).

Verse 8 is Luke's explanation of what Paul's reasons were to hijack the issue by saying what he said:

8 (The Sadducees say that there is no resurrection, and that there are neither angels nor spirits, but the Pharisees believe all these things.) (Acts 23:8 NIV).

Calvin loves Paul usually, but he is frank on what lack of scruples Paul used:

"For the astuteness, which he used, was closely related to a feint, that was not far removed from lying...." (Mark Douglas Given, Paul's True Rhetoric: Ambiguity, Cunning and Deception (2001) at 81, quoting Calvin.)

"Paul's stratagem, seems out of keeping with a servant of Christ." Id.

"He [i.e., Paul] says the circumstances of his case turn on the resurrection of the dead. But we know the issue was about other matters, that he abrogated the ceremonies, and admitted the gentiles into the covenant of the Gentiles." Id.

The true charge upon which Paul was "called into question" was stated earlier by Luke in Acts 21:28 (KJV):

28 “Crying out, Men of Israel, help: This is the man, that teacheth all men every where against the people, and the law, and this place: and further brought Greeks also into the temple, and hath polluted [defiled] this holy place.”

Werner's Bible Commentary admits even while apologizing for Paul at every turn:

"Moreover, he was fully aware of the opposing views to which the Pharisees and Sadducees adhered. So it appears that he deliberately chose to set the members of the court against one another...." ("Acts 23:1-35," Werner's Bible Commentary.)

Loveday Alexander in 2007 similarly wrote:

"The Sanhedrin hearing is deliberately highjacked by Paul into a theological debate on the resurrection (23.6-8)." (Loveday Alexander, Acts in its Ancient Literary Context (Continuum, 2007) at 200.)

Hyam Maccoby says, Paul's use of the resurrection issue demonstrated "great presence of mind," but at the same time it involved "a distinct lack of scruple to play on this situation to escape condemnation." (Hyman Maccoby, The Mythmaker (1986) at 165.)

These statements were in court, and this means the Sanhedrin would have put Paul under oath.

““The ancient Jewish court system was called the Sanhedrin.” (Shira Schoenberg, The Sanhedrin.)

The Ten Commandments prohibit bearing false testimony. This means you cannot lie in court. See "False Witness," Wikipedia

WIkipedia says:

“According to the New Testament, Jesus explains that obedience to the prohibition against false testimony from the ten commandments is a requirement for eternal life.” Id., citing Matt 19:19; Mark 10:19; and Luke 18:20

Jesus in Matthew 15:18-19 states:

18 “But those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart; and they defile the man.

19 For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies….”

In Matt 19:16-19, we read:

16 And, behold, one came and said unto him, Good Master, what good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life?

17 And he said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God: but if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments.

18 He saith unto him, Which? Jesus said, Thou shalt do no murder, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness,…
