Habakkuk and Paul – Ep #9: Does Paul load himself with many pledges – Hab. 2:6?

Jul 20, 2022

Video Description

Habakkuk and Paul – Ep #9: Does Paul load himself with many pledges – Hab. 2:6?

The Jewish Publication Society 1917 version has the correct meaning of verse 11 -- "pledges" which the KJV got wrong.

6 Shall not all these take up a parable against him, and a taunting riddle against him, [10] and say: 'Woe to him that increases that which is not his! [11] how long? and that [loads] himself with many pledges!’ [cf. RSV]

A pledge is a solemn promise or undertaking.

A plege is not the same as a vow in YHWH's name, but is simply a solemn promise in a legal context. This is clear in Number 30:1 and 3.

“1 Then Moses said to the heads of the tribes of Israel, “This is what the LORD has commanded: 2 If a man makes a vow to the LORD or swears an oath to obligate himself by a pledge, he must not break his word; he must do everything he has promised.’ (Nu 30:1 vow not a pledge.)

Jesus teaches against using pledges in non-legal contexts, suchas common conversation (and likely letters): Matt 5:33-36 ; Matt 23:16-22 KJV

See (Benson Commentary on Matt 23:16-22).

James warns that we should rather not swear at all.

“But above all, my brethren, do not swear, either by heaven or by earth or with any other oath, but let your yes be yes and your no be no, that you may not fall under condemnation.” James 5:12.

Paul made 4 pledges of solemnly telling the truth:

PLEDGE #1: “I assure you before God that what I am writing you is no lie.” Gal. 1:20 (NIV) -47 AD – 12 yrs later.

PLEDGE #2: “I speak the truth in Christ—I am not lying, my conscience confirms it through the Holy Spirit— Romans 9:1 (NIV)

PLEDGE #3. “31 The God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which is blessed for evermore, knows that I lie not.” (2 Cor. 11:31 KJV)

PLEDGE #4. “And for this purpose I was appointed a herald and an apostle — I am telling the truth, I am not lying — and a teacher of the true faith to the Gentiles.” (1 Ti. 2:7.)

We have proved that Paul loaded up on pledges – solemn verbal promises to truth. We know 1 of 4 was contradicted by Paul in his speech in Acts 22. How much can we trust the other three?
