Habakkuk & Paul – Ep #5: Does Paul’s command to Timothy make Paul “a treacherous dealer” of “wine”?

Jul 19, 2022

Video Description

In the Jewish Public Society Bible, Habakkuk 2:4-5 reads:

4. Behold, his soul is [1] puffed up, [2] it is not upright in him; but [3] the righteous shall live by his faith.

5. Yea, moreover, [4] wine is a treacherous dealer; [5] the haughty man [6] abides not; he who [7] enlarges his desire as the nether-world [Sh’l], and [8] is as death, and cannot be satisfied, but [9] gathers unto him all nations, and heaps unto him all peoples.

We are focusing upon [4[ "wine is a treacherous dealer."

The commentary on this verse' meaning is quite diverse.

Gil: “Or rather, ‘how much less’ or ‘more o, wine dealing treacherously’

Calvin: “Henderson, agreeing with Grotius and Mede, takes the latter sense, and renders the line as follows:—

“Moreoever wine is treacherous; The haughty man stayeth not at home.” [Cf. Coffman “wine is treacherous….”

Often prophecy cannot be discerned until you see its fulfillment.

So let's look if there is a problem in something Paul wrote about wine drinking.

Out of the blue in a closing, Paul issues a COMMAND to replace water with wine in Timothy’s diet: Paul says, “Drink no longer water, but use a little wine for thy stomach's sake and thine often infirmities” (1 Tim 5:23 KJV 1611)

Check the Greek tab at Bible.hub.com: “No longer drink [only] water, but….” (Greek tab.) This means “only” is added, and is not present in Paul's Greek. This is why KJV, and none others until recent era have 'helped' Paul by fixing his absolute command.

Paul failed to edit his words, and it literally says to no longer drink water; drink a little wine (instead).

During the termperance movements, some were claiming this verse should be removed from the Bible -- it must be an error, a corruption, etc.

But until Paul was rescued by frankly unauthorized additions to Scripture, Paul was a "treacherous dealer" of "wine" to potentially millions of souls who relied upon this verse to make wine, not water, their daily liquid intake.
